RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- Attention North Carolina drivers and vehicle owners!

There's a big change coming starting October 1, 2026.

If you own a vehicle and your registration is due after this date, don't expect to get a sticker for your vehicle's license plate or a paper registration card, which has been the norm for decades in the Tar Heel State.

You still have to register your vehicle(s), however, you will no longer be required to carry a registration card in your vehicle or display a license plate sticker.

All registrations will be kept electronically. The change was added to the state's $34.4 billion budget that was signed into law by Governor Stein in July.

Here are the key changes:

  • Physical registration cards will be replaced by an electronic notice of registration.
  • Traditional registration renewal stickers will be eliminated.
  • Law enforcement and authorized users will access registration information electronically.
  • Drivers may still request printed copies of their registration for a fee if needed.
  • Vehicle inspections remain required, but inspection status will be tied to electronic registration records.
  • Vehicles may still be inspected up to 90 days before registration expiration.

So, don't expect to get that new shiny sticker to add on your license tag. Additionally, the proof of registration and insurance card you keep in your wallet, glove compartment, armrest, or ashtray will no longer be required as of October 1.
