Man in custody after shooting, standoff and fire at the home

GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WTVD) -- A man is in custody after a shooting at a home early Wednesday led to an hours-long standoff with police and a fire that destroyed much of the house, authorities said.

Goldsboro police said the man shot a woman inside a home on Shelley Drive just before 6 a.m. as she tried to escape what they described as a "potential breaking and entering in progress."

Officers returned fire, potentially hitting the man before he ran back inside, leading to a lengthy standoff.

Police said they used crisis negotiators and robots during the standoff. After officers attempted to use gas to force the suspect out, a fire started in a bedroom, destroying most of the home before the man was taken into custody.

A neighbor across the street tells ABC11 police knocked on her door around 5:45 a.m., evacuating her family as officers responded to the situation.

"So many things go through your mind at that moment, you don't know if someone in your family is hurt, but when you do find out about what's going on across the street it's something scary, I mean it's traumatizing to say the least," said Alma Loera, who lives across the street from the house.

Police said the woman who was shot was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

The incident is under investigation as an attempted murder and arson case.
