Raleigh police officer involved in head-on crash with wrong-way driver

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Raleigh police officer collided head-on with a wrong-way driver on South New Hope Road overnight.

At 3:13 a.m., the officer saw a wrong-way driver in a white BMW.

The officer changed lanes to try and avoid a crash, but the BMW driver hit him head-on.

The driver tried to flee the scene, but the officer took him into custody after a chase on foot.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the crash.

That officer was not hurt, but the other driver was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Izayaih Xzayvin Cooper, 20, is facing multiple charges including eluding arrest with a motor vehicle and reckless driving to endanger.

A part of New Hope Road was closed while investigators gathered evidence, but has since reopened.
