RALEIGH, N.C. -- The State of North Carolina has agreed to pay $200,000 to settle a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the mother of a Raleigh man killed in a 2024 crash involving a state trooper.
According to court records, the settlement stems from the death of 31-year-old Tyrone Mason on Capital Boulevard in October 2024.
The case drew widespread attention after body camera footage showed then-Trooper Garrett Macario calling his supervisor, Sgt. Matthew Morrison, after the crash.
The video showed Morrison instructing Macario not to tell Raleigh police that he had initially attempted to stop Mason and instead say that he had simply come upon the crash scene.
The release of the footage ultimately led to both troopers being dismissed.
Mason's mother later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the state.
Court records now show North Carolina has agreed to a $200,000 settlement in the case.
The settlement comes nearly two years after the deadly crash and the revelations surrounding the troopers' actions in its aftermath.
