Smithfield child-care worker charged after infant severely injured

SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WTVD) -- Smithfield Police have charged a daycare provider with intentionally abusing an 8-month-old.

Brooke Ashley Reiner, 26, was also charged with providing child care while unlicensed, resulting in serious injury to a child.

Police launched an investigation into the Sunrise to Sunset home child-care center in the 200 block of Cloverdale Drive on Monday after the baby was taken to WakeMed with serious injuries.

According to court documents, Reiner allegedly threw the baby onto a changing table, slamming the infant's head against the table.

She is also accused of striking the child multiple times in the face, head and abdomen.

The baby underwent emergency brain surgery at WakeMed and is listed in serious condition.

Reiner is being held under a $5 million bond.
