State trooper shot at during attempted traffic stop in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- A North Carolina state trooper came under gunfire on Tuesday night during an attempted traffic stop in Fayetteville.

The trooper was not hit, but the Highway Patrol vehicle was riddled with bullets.

It unfolded shortly before 8:30 p.m. when the trooper tried to stop a speeding vehicle on I-295, and a man leaned out of the passenger window of the car and fired several gunshots, hitting the patrol vehicle, including the front bumper and the tires.

The trooper was not injured but his vehicle became disabled.

The trooper's vehicle became disabled because of a flat tire, and the driver sped away, taking the exit on McArthur Road heading east.

The Fayetteville Police Department and Cumberland County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

The search continues for the suspects. On Wednesday, the Highway Patrol said it was looking for a silver or light blue 2007 Dodge Caliber with its rear bumper visibly missing.

The trooper told ABC11 that he clocked the Dodge going 82 mph in a 65 mph zone and that a person in the suspect vehicle started firing shots as soon as he activated his blue lights.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the State Highway Patrol at (910) 486-1334.
