CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WTVD) -- Eastgate Crossing is continuing to rebuild one year after Tropical Storm Chantal caused an estimated $11 million in damage to the shopping center and its businesses.
Several businesses faced months-long closures following the storm, including Great Outdoor Provision Co, where Assistant Manager Brian Ezzell said the damage was extensive.
"It was not pleasant, but it was also something that we all will remember," Ezzell said. "I think we have some good memories from it, too."
Ezzell said much of the store's inventory and interior had to be replaced.
"A lot of things were gone," Ezzell said. "There were a lot of things that we couldn't really sell ... all the wood had to go, the floors had to go."
With help from employees and community members, Great Outdoor Provision Co. reopened 100 days after the storm. Kipos Greek Taverna and Guglhupf also completed extensive repairs and have since reopened.
Not every business returned. Talbots, Birkenstock and Bruegger's Bagels closed permanently after the storm. However, the former Bruegger's space is expected to be occupied by Einstein Bros. Bagels, although an opening date has not been announced.

Ezzell said the recovery effort strengthened the store's relationship with the community.
"One of the greatest things is seeing the customers just came roaring back," Ezzell said. "We are very fortunate to have such a great connection with our customers."
As part of its rebuilding efforts, Great Outdoor Provision Co. has added higher walls and flood barriers at its doors as Eastgate Crossing continues its recovery from Tropical Storm Chantal.
