Opening Day at the North Carolina State Fair

RALEIGH, North Carolina (WTVD) -- It's that time of the year! The North Carolina State Fair opens today at 3 p.m.

The fair is offering $1.50 admission and some vendors will be offering food for $1.50 on opening day to celebrate the fair's 150th anniversary.

For the first time this year, you'll be be able to sample beer and wine from 40 breweries and 40 wineries from across the state.

"The North Carolina State Fair is actually the last fair in the country to offer beer and wine on site," said Margo Metzger, of Our State Magazine. "Every other state fair already has this so it's already proven that it can be done safely."

You won't be able to take alcoholic beverages into the fair. They must be consumed at Our State Public House in Heritage Circle and only those 21 and older can enter.

Some new foods this year include "wafflewich sliders" from Chick-N-Que, the "hotcakes and chicken" from Hot Chix and arepas from Arepas Locas, voted best new fair food this year.
