It happened around 6:30 a.m. on US 301, near Bass Road, one-mile north of Lucama.

Troopers said the bus on a route for Hunt High School had stopped to pick up a student and was beginning to move forward when it was hit from behind.

The 79-year-old driver of the car died. He was identified as James Earl Cockrell of Lucama.

There were about 10 students on the bus. Five were taken to Wilson Medical Center with injuries. None appear to be life-threatening.
