Tillis preparing to be sworn in on Capitol Hill
It's a changing of the guard in Washington this week and Senator-Elect Thom Tillis is a part of it.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVD) -- It's a changing of the guard in Washington.

Republicans are moving in and that includes North Carolina Senator-Elect Thom Tillis, who is preparing to be sworn in to take over the seat previously held by Kay Hagan.

Tillis talked about working on legislation he knows that has a chance of getting vetoed.

"What our goal is to do here is to get sufficient support to send legislation to the president's desk," said Tillis. "If we have Democrats and Republicans joining together, we're going to send to the president, hopefully, he's going to sign those items into law. In other cases, if he doesn't, then the American people will have a very clear choice between what we're trying to do for the country and what the president chooses to do or not do."

Tillis will be sworn in by Vice-President Joe Biden, and he is not alone on Capitol Hill.

The House of Representatives is welcoming 58 freshmen -- 43 Republicans and 15 Democrats.

In the Senate, 12 of the 13 new lawmakers are Republicans.
