DURHAM (WTVD) -- Police say a man was found shot to death at an apartment complex in northeast Durham Monday morning.
It happened around 8:40 in the 18-hundred block of Cheek Road near North Hardee Street.
Investigators said 52-year-old Frederick Edgerton of Durham was shot in a parking lot. He was declared dead at the scene.
No other information was immediately available. Officers were seen taking a person into custody, but it wasn't clear if that had anything to do with the shooting.
Residents said Edgerton - known as "Mr. Fred" - was a former Marine who was hired as an apartment manager to step up security at the complex because of crime problems.
"He was trying to help," said one resident.
Edgerton had installed speed bumps and put up a security fence.
