CARY, N.C. (WTVD) -- Sonny Alston, better known as Mr. Sonny, was a beloved crossing guard at Northwoods Elementary School. He died Sunday after being in the hospital because of a stroke.
For more than two decades, Alston would wave at the students on Chapel Hill Road.
Parents said he would always be there no matter what, rain or shine.
"Today my dad has gone to heaven and he will be waving and smiling others into those wonderful gates," his son said.
The children at Northwoods sent him cards while he was in the hospital.
The Town of Cary employed Alston since August 1995.
