BENSON, N.C. (WTVD) -- One person was killed in an accident on Interstate 95 near Benson Wednesday afternoon.
The State Highway Patrol said a GMC SUV and a Hyundai passenger car were both traveling north on I-95 when the SUV attempted to merge into the outside lane and struck the Hyundai.
The driver of the GMC then lost control and flipped over several times. The SUV came to rest in the southbound lanes.
The driver of the GMC died at the scene. A passenger in the GMC was airlifted to WakeMed.
Four people inside the Hyundai were not injured.
The names of those involved have not been released.
Traffic was backed up for several miles for about an hour.
