Tractor trailer hits bridge on Hwy 70 under I-85

DURHAM (WTVD) -- Lanes of Interstate 85 were temporarily closed at U.S. Highway 70 in Orange County after a serious crash Friday morning.

The accident was first reported just before 9 a.m. Pictures from Chopper 11 HD showed a semi-truck slid between two bridges and over the embankment wall.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said the truck was headed north and not pulling a trailer when traffic in front of it began to slow.

Troopers said driver Marco Myrick, 38, of Charlotte, tried to stop, but the brakes on the truck locked up.

Myrick was pinned in the cab by the crash. He was cut out by firefighters and taken to Duke with non-life-threatening injuries.

He's charged with failing to maintain lane control.

Traffic was backed up for miles in each direction while wrecker crews pulled the truck back up to the interstate and removed it.

DOT officials said the truck hit several parts of the bridge, but its structural integrity was not compromised.
