Cumberland County officials deny voting machines 'rigged' for Trump
FAYETTEVILLE (WTVD) -- Cumberland County election officials are debunking claims that votes are being wrongfully switched in the electronic voting machines.
A number of viewers have called ABC11 or sent in messages on Facebook with concerns about trying to select Hillary Clinton but having Donald Trump chosen instead. Some have reported they had to go back and redo their choice.
The Cumberland County Board of Elections has been using the "I-voting" electronic voting machines since 2006. Officials say each machine is tested to ensure that every vote is counted properly.
Here are some tips to make sure your vote goes to the candidate that you intended:
- First, select the candidate "box" with your finger. If you have long nails or large fingers the wrong candidate may be selected by accident
- Cumberland County Elections Office will provide an eraser that works as a stylus to ensure touch accuracy.
- When it comes to the actual ballot on the electronic machine, there are three confirmation pages that confirm your selection before your ballot is cast.
Beginning in 2017, Cumberland County will be going back to the paper ballot system while they look into new electronic voting machines.
Monday evening, the NC NAACP released a statement saying they will be "investigating all complaints received by our members, and by voters our members are assisting across the state."
"We are gravely serious at this time about protecting the voting rights of North Carolinians. No voter should feel intimidated in this election or concerned that your vote will not count," said Rev. William Barber in the statement.
