Police say the man tried to skip out on taxi fare but was struck by the cab of the driver he tried to stiff.
Authorities told the Star-News of Wilmington that the 22-year-old man had the taxi take him to a convenience store Sunday.
Police say the man promised to get money for the fare out of an ATM, but then started to run from the parking lot.
Investigators say the cab driver chased the man, turning the taxi hard to the right to strike him.
Police say the man struck remains in the hospital, and his identity has not been determined.
