RTP IBM workers worried

RALEIGH Members of the IBM employee group Alliance@IBM say they're hearing that layoffs are coming later this month because of the global economic downturn. That has not been confirmed by IBM, and a spokesperson said the company does not respond to rumors.

The Alliance says it's hearing the company could cut as many as 16,000 jobs worldwide. IBM has nearly 400,000 employees nationwide and more than 10,000 at RTP.

If the company does go through with a massive job cut, it wouldn't be the first time. The Alliance says IBM cut 15,600 jobs in 2002.

As the recession continues, other Triangle tech companies have cut jobs in the past few months including Lenovo, Sony Ericsson, and Nortel Networks to name few.
