Economy down, NC workplace deaths up

CHARLOTTE,NC Officials worry the nation's sagging economy is partly to blame.

Preliminary data released this week by the North Carolina Department of Labor shows there were 59 work-related deaths last year. That's up from 45 in 2007.

Experts worry companies could be cutting corners and making their workplaces more dangerous. Department spokeswoman Dolores Quesenberry said training and safety measures are often among the first things cut from budgets. She said officials are trying to ensure that employers train their workers.
