Lawmakers want ban on texting

RALEIGH Unlike a ban on talking on cell phones that currently applies only to teenagers, this proposed ban would apply to all drivers.

If it passes, anyone caught texting behind the wheel would face a $100 fine and court costs. There would be no points on your license or any insurance penalty. Emergency service workers would be exempt from the law.

The ban on anyone under the age of 18 using a cell phone while driving passed in 2006, but an insurance industry study released last June found that cell phone use by high school students was about the same before and after the law began.
