The breach may have involved the personal information of at least 13 customers. Their names, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, driver license numbers, Social Security numbers and possible medical information could have been compromised.
The DMV didn't say how it happened or who may have been responsible.
It says it "will inform customers who may be affected as soon as possible."
It also asked anyone who noticed unusual activity at the Carrboro office between July 1, 2008 and April 6, 2009 to contact the DMV License and Theft Bureau at (877) 286-6981.
