Police say a neighbor called police to the complex around 11 a.m. Saturday, saying a man and a woman needed help in apartment 19 B.
"We were told that two people were inside needed EMS," Durham Police Department Capt. Ed Sarvis said. "When we got here, we found two people were deceased inside. Medics went in and declared them deceased and our patrol officers immediately backed out and called for our investigators to come over."
On Sunday, authorities identified the male victim as 24-year-old Jamarcus Valentino Umstead. Police say Umstead is listed as a tenant at the apartment where his body was found. Investigators are still trying to determine the woman's identity.
Police say both victims were shot and the case is being investigated as a double homicide.
Some neighbors nearby say they heard gunshots Friday night.
"I just heard some gunfire last night," resident John Dennard said. "I didn't think anything about it because it didn't sound like it was close or anything. It sounded way off in the distance. I didn't think anything of it because, you know, nothing like that ever happens around here."
"It's just a nice area, it's quiet and everybody just does their own thing and does what they need to do and I've never had any problems," resident Tammie Harris said.
Investigators do not believe it was a random incident, based on their investigation so far. No charges have been filed at this time.
Police want anyone with information to give them a call.
