Officials accused Peter Maroney of using pepper spray and his night stick on a patient last October. Maroney said the patient, who had a history of mental illness, hit him in the face.
After an initial review, it was determined that Maroney did nothing wrong, but hospital administrators later decided he used excessive force.
Maroney is a former military police officer who served in the Army before joining the VA police force seven years ago.
