The student - who is 17-years-old - is pregnant.
"He was real nice, caring and everything, just loved everybody," Louisburg High School student Juana Deleoen said. "I really didn't believe it, it was shocking to me. I didn't want to believe it really."
In court Monday, Collier pleaded guilty to indecent liberties with a student under a deal with prosecutors that would have included five to six months in jail. The charge normally carries a sentence of more than a year. Instead, the judge agreed to a suspended sentence and put Collier on probation for one year.
According to prosecutors, the girl's parents requested the suspended sentence and asked that Collier be allowed to stay in contact with their daughteras everyone wants him to have time with the child that is due in July.
Collier resigned from his positions as athletic director and head football coach at Louisburg High shortly before his arrest.
Students at the school have mixed reaction about the decision to keep him out of jail and have permission to see the student he had sex with.
"I was shocked when I heard the news, I was just like wow," student Chris Sutton said. "I think if it is his (child), he should be able to go see her and stuff like that."
"I think it should have never happened, but now that it has happened, the child shouldn't go without a father," Deleoen said. "He should have a father in his life."
Eyewitness News was unable to reach Collier for a comment Wednesday.
