Sheriff Tracy Carter told Eyewitness News that the child was in a car when the child's mother ran inside a house on Swann's Station Road to speak with a family member.
While the mother was in the house, the child got out of its car seat and apparently put the car into gear. Then the child tried get out of the car and that's when authorities say the child was run over by the car.
The child was flown to UNC Hospitals, but the child's condition is not known. Sheriff Carter said his department has investigated the incident and determined it is an accident.
