According to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, it began investigating the case when detectives received information from the victim's mother, who lives in Clinton.
The woman said her 7-year-old son told her Perkinson sexually assaulted him.
Investigators say the incident probably took place earlier this year in Siler City.
Perkinson is being held under a $95,000 bond. His court date is scheduled for June 29.
