Cumberland County Sheriff Earl R. Butler said Thursday that he's declaring a "war of justice" against Spring Lake crime and defended his record policing the municipality. The sheriff took over patrols in Spring Lake after several members of the town's police force were indicted on criminal charges and the police chief resigned.

Thursday, the sheriff said some in the town have expressed concerns about his ability to provide security after a man was killed in a robbery and there have been a string of other hold-ups in the Spring Lake area.

Butler pointed to his department's record, saying six people have been arrested in connection with the murder and another man is charged in the string of robberies. The man's son is also being sought.
