Hagan warned that inaction would jeopardize the nation's economic security.
Burr said later that making a mistake in the reform legislation would mean future generations would be stuck trying to reverse the damage.
"I'm vehemently opposed to a government option that would proposals that are going through congress now because of the increased cost," Sen. Burr said.
"There's a projection in several years that a family of four, health care costs would be $25,000, that's unsustainable," Sen. Hagan said.
Hagan said she supports a government backed insurance option that would allow the uninsured access to care.
And as Burr mentioned, he opposes government involvement in such a plan.
