Mathis ran from the scene, but Fayetteville police spotted him while patrolling the area and followed him home.
Officers arrested Mathis at his home after finding two handguns and a sawed-off shotgun hidden in an outdoor shed on the property.
According to the sheriff's office, Mathis became combative after learning he was being charged.
He was arrested and placed in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a secured $1,500 bond, which would be modified to unsecured if a parent signed for his release.
Mathis' first court appearance was set for Friday afternoon.
The investigation is ongoing.
