School bus driver charged with driving drunk

LEE COUNTY, NC Broadway Police Chief Todd Hinnant told Eyewitness News that a student called his parent from his cell phone because 51-year-old Bonnie Gilmore Sloan was driving erratically and he was scared.

Investigators say Sloan hit two mail boxes - one on West Harrington Street in Broadway and another on Ruth Ann Lane. On board the bus were 20 students headed to East Lee Middle School.

Sloan delivered the kids to the school and then left in her personal vehicle. That's when officers caught up with her.

Sloan now faces a host of charges including, driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger, misdemeanor child abuse, and hit and run leaving the scene of property damage.

She was released on $10,000 bond late Thursday.
