Man shot in home invasion

FAYETTEVILLE Witnesses told ABC11 that a man knocked on the door, forced his way into a house, and started shooting.

Kevin Pirtle, 41, was hit twice. He ran to a neighbor's house and collapsed.

"There was a man screaming in the backyard he had been shot," said neighbor Darlene Horn. "He said they were after money and they tried to get him to down on the ground and put the gun to the back of his head, but he managed to escape."

Horn said she and her husband tended to Pirtle's wounds until an ambulance arrived.

"Grazed on the back, shot in the leg area, and his hands were bleeding really bad from breaking out a widow trying to escape," she said.

Pirtle was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for surgery.

Police roped off several homes in the neighborhood and a nearby school was locked down as a precaution while detectives investigated.
