According to the Highway Patrol, 15-year-old Johnathan Mckenzie and a group of friends were walking along the shoulder of the road. They were headed towards Liberty Baptist Church.
That's when eyewitnesses said McKenzie darted into traffic and into the path of a car.
"All that we know so far is that we have a vehicle here that was traveling south on Ray Road and a pedestrian darted across the road struck by the vehicle," NC Highway Patrol Trooper Daniel Edwards said. "Right now everything is still under investigation. We haven't yet figured out why he crossed the vehicle at that point."
The driver of the car that struck Mckenzie told Eyewitness News there was nothing he could do and he had no time to react.
The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident and no charges have been filed.
