Spring Lake picks new police chief

SPRING LAKE The town's pick is Troy McDuffie - who will officially begin employment December 14. McDuffie is already familiar with the area. He's the current police chief of Red Springs south of Fayetteville.

McDuffie takes over the embattled department from interim chief Greg Jarvies who's managed since former chief A.C. Brown abruptly resigned following the arrest of two police officers earlier this year.

The SBI charged Sgt. Alphonzo Devonne Whittington, Jr. and Sgt. Darryl Eugene Coulter, Sr. with a host of charges related to alleged misconduct on the job. Neither man has come to trial.

Since those arrests, the Spring Lake Police Department has been stripped of its arrest powers. Town officials hope that the department will soon be returned to normal operation.
