Lejeune Marine killed in Afghanistan

A Camp Lejeune-based Marine has died from wounds he received in August.

According to Camp Lejeune officials, 21-year-old Cpl. Xhacob Latorre of Connecticut died December 8 from injuries he received on August 10 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

Latorre was a mortar man assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade.

He joined the Marine Corps in June 2005 and was promoted to the rank of corporal on June 1, 2008. Latorre was a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and deployed to Afghanistan in May 2009.

His awards include the Purple Heart Medal, two Combat Action Ribbons, Good Conduct Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal.

Latorre is survived by his wife and son.
