I-85 wreck backs up interstate for miles

DURHAM-ORANGE COUNTY LINE

The NC Highway Patrol told ABC11 Eyewitness News it received a call about a car driving carelessly on I-85 around 11 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle in question was reportedly traveling about 40 mph headed north. A secret service agent first spotted the vehicle, a black Volvo station wagon.

The secret service officer called the Highway Patrol and then attempted to stop the car, but the car did not stop. The Highway Patrol got involved around mile marker 161 and tried to stop the car. Again, the driver would not stop.

The car eventually crashed at mile marker 170, injuring the driver. The driver's condition is not known.

Chopper11 HD flew over the wreckage and it appeared as if one other car was involved.

Authorities said other than the driver of the Volvo, no one else was injured.

Traffic was backed up for miles while authorities cleared the scene. One lane of northbound 85 remained closed until after 2 p.m.
