The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a two-year-old child died Monday evening when she was hit by a car in southern Franklin County.

Investigators say the child - Dominque Moises Alvarenga of 1241 Mays Crossroad Road - walked out onto the street and was struck by a vehicle headed south on Mays Crossroad around 5:30 p.m.

The driver stopped, but told troopers she feared for her life when the child's family became hostile. The woman drove to a convenience store in Louisburg and called authorities.

The district attorney told ABC11 Wednesday that no charges will be filed, but the Highway Patrol said the matter is still under investigation.
