Officials say the IRS normally sends federal tax information to the state department to make sure taxpayers are compliant with their returns.
The North Carolina Department of Revenue says less than 2,000 people are affected by the miscalculation.
The error was mailed on March 2, 2011 to taxpayers who claimed the standard deduction for 2008 and who increased their deduction for property taxes or loss after a federal disaster.
Officials say if you received a notice on that date and the notice indicates a "reason code" of 893 or the explanation section says "an adjustment has been made to change the federal taxable income as reported on your North Carolina return to the amount per your federal return," you should contact NCDOR Taxpayer Assistance at 1-877-252-3052.
