Chris Hondros, 41, was working for the Getty Images News Services in Misurata, Libya when a piece of shrapnel struck him in the head.
Hondros was working alongside film director and producer Tim Hetherington, who was nominated for an Oscar for the war documentary "Restrepo."
Hetherington also was killed.
A native of New York, Hondros moved to NC as a child. He studied literature as an undergraduate student at North Carolina State University and went on to work at the Fayetteville Observer. After completing his masters in Ohio, he returned to New York.
According to Hondro's biography, he has covered most of the world's major conflicts since the late 1990s, including wars in Kosovo, Lebanon, Afghanistan and Iraq. His work has been featured in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times.
