According to the State Highway Patrol, a minivan driven by Ellen Kealy, 45, turned onto Castleberry Road into the path of two motorcycles riding side-by-side.
One motorcycle hit the minivan. The rider, William Richards, 48, of Clayton, was killed.
The driver of the second motorcycle, Frederick Brown, 45, of Cary, laid his motorcycle down, and missed the van.
He was taken to Johnston Medical Center for treatment.
Troopers say two children were in the van at the time of the wreck, but they and Kealy were uninjured.
Charges are pending.
