Louis Chao Chen, 39, recently moved from Durham to Seattle to work for Virginia Mason Hospital. But KOMO-TV reports hospital officials grew concerned when Chen did not show up for an orientation session August 11.
A co-worker went to his apartment and found Chen nude, injured, and covered in blood, according to the documents. The co-worker called 911 and police found Chen's 29-year-old male partner and their adopted 2-year-old son stabbed to death.
When officers asked him who attacked him and his partner, Chen responded "I did," the documents said.
Chen had been in the Seattle area for about a month. He had just finished a residency studying endocrinology at Duke.
Authorities said Chen had cut wounds when they transported him to the hospital. They also said there was cause to suspect he may have taken a combination of drugs. He was being treated at Harborview Medical Center.
Prosecutors have until Tuesday to file charges. He was expected to be booked on murder charges after he's released from the hospital.
