He will begin his duties on October 1. In addition to his superintendent duties, he will provide consulting for the school system six days in September.
"We are extremely pleased to have such a seasoned and respected educational leader in Edgecombe County to help advise and work with this Board to assure a smooth transition for our employees while providing the students in our county the best education possible," Board of Education Chair Ann Kent said.
Prior to Edgecombe, Burns served as the Wake County Public Schools superintendent.
Edgecombe's current superintendent, Wayne Talley, announced his resignation in a staff meeting on August 1. His last day is September 30.
