Fatal accident closes I-40

JOHNSTON COUNTY

According to Trooper Christopher Bell, the crash happened in the westbound lanes just inside Johnston County near the Sampson County line when a tire on the Ford vehicle blew out.

Bell said the driver lost control and drove into the median, then overcorrected, came back onto the pavement, overturned, and rolled several times. The vehicle came to rest on the right shoulder.

Five people were in the vehicle. All passengers were wearing seatbelts.

Driver Tracey Colvin, 44, of Pender County was taken to WakeMed with non-life threatening injuries.

Colvin's cousin Joseph Hayes, 47, of Burgaw sustained head and leg injuries. He was also taken to WakeMed after rescuers cut him from the wreckage.

Hayes' wife Edna Dixon, 30, was in the backseat and was ejected from the vehicle. She died.

Hayes and Dixon's children were also in the backseat. Five-year-old Sheleah Hayes and 1-year-old Shanyah Hayes were treated and released from WakeMed.

Trooper Smith said the crash was clearly the result of the blown tire and no charges will be filed.
