The notice said the contact likely happened between 2 and 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, at the Wake County Animal Center, 820 Beacon Lake Drive, Raleigh.
The gray tabby kitten named Silverbell was in Cat Room A.
Visitors who had direct contact with the cat are asked to call the Communicable Disease hotline at (919) 250-4462.
"Our focus is on finding people who may have been exposed to rabies and making sure they receive the medical care that they need," said Sue Lynn Ledford, Wake County Public Health director, in a news release.
