The first happened in Robeson County near Mile Marker 35, just north of St Pauls.
Troopers said 37-year-old Roxanne Jones of Elrod, NC was travelling north on a moped when she was hit by a semi. The semi caught fire and went off the road.
The driver, 52-year-old Keith Green of Columbia, South Carolina was not injured.
The second accident happened close to Mile Marker 34 as traffic slowed for the first crash.
Investigators said a car driven by 58-year-old Richard Johnston of Bronx, NY hit the back of a semi. Johnston had minor injuries, but his wife Elsa was killed. Troopers said the investigation continues and charges could be filed.
