Catalina Riuez also was a mother of three and a decorated special operations soldier who had recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. She was living with a friend and trying to get away from the man who police say kidnapped and killed her.
On October 6, police say 20-year-old Warren Cummings III grabbed Ruiez at the home where she had been staying and forced her into his SUV. Police tracked Cummings to an apartment on Cliffdale Road.
Officers say Cummings fired one at them and then shot Ruiez before turning the gun on himself. According to court records, Ruiez and Cummings had two children together.
In August, Ruiez filed a restraining order against Cummings and then a second one in September after she said he punched her.
The Army says Ruiez was a member of an all-female operations cultural support team.
