Former State Rep. Allred has died

BURLINGTON, N.C.

The former state lawmaker passed away Saturday.

A report states the 64-year-old republican, who once represented Alamance County, died at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro. He suffered a brief illness.

Allred served eight terms in the State House and two terms in the State Senate. He was also an Alamance County Commissioner and a business owner in Burlington.

In 2009, Allred was pulled over by troopers for going 102 in a 65 mile per hour zone while on his way to vote in the House Floor session. Once he got there some lawmakers accused him of being drunk and behaving inappropriately with a legislative intern. Allred denied the allegations.

Allred made headlines in 2010 after being arrested for DWI.

Funeral arrangements are being handled at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington.
