It happened just after 8 p.m. on Short Street in Littleton.
The Halifax County Sheriff's Office said its investigation shows four men attempted to break into the home and were confronted by the homeowner.
One suspect was shot and killed.
Another man, Kayman Northington, was held by the homeowner until deputies arrived. The two other men fled.
Northington was charged with first-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon, he was placed in the Halifax County Jail under a $200,000 bond.
