Body found in Durham lake

DURHAM

The area is where a missing woman's car was found last week.

"The fire department showed up, then they went over there, then they called the police in, then that's when we started seeing crime scene unit and everything else," said neighbor Carlos Borland.

Borland was there when police recovered the body of the person they describe as a white female. He says the police presence is similar to what he saw in the same area last week.

"Last week, they were skimming the lake, the whole Sheriff's Department," said Borland.

The week before that, Dec. 12, police discovered Margaret Lewis' car abandoned near this same lake on Pelham Road. Just days earlier, the 58-year-old had been reported missing. She lives about a mile away from the scene.

Sariah Heil is hoping the unidentified body is not Lewis, the neighbor she describes as friendly, but guarded.

"She was just very, very, very quiet," said Heil. "I really had to reach out to her to say hi and be neighborly."

For the safety of the neighborhood, Borland is hoping it's not foul play.

"I have a 13-year-old son right here and actually he was at the lake fishing today -- him and his cousin. So it's really, it's really horrifying," said Borland.

Police haven't identified the body nor have they said how the unidentified woman died.
