19-year-old killed in scooter accident

RALEIG

Raleigh police say the accident happened around 1:30 p.m. in the 5400 block of Dana Drive near Buck Jones Road.

Elijah Ijah McLendon, 19, was killed while riding a scooter down his street, something loved ones say he loved to do.

"My mom started screaming and I'm seeing a little motorcycle, a scooter skidding down the road," said eyewitness Adam Woodard.

Officers believe McLendon hit a curb, sending him onto the pavement, and sending a neighborhood into action.

"I checked his heart rate it was very faint and I called 911," said eyewitness Capree Brown.

"I tried to keep his head in the same position that it was, but I was trying to make sure he was breathing," Woodard added.

With Brown on the phone with 911, Woodard started CPR, but despite their best efforts, McLendon lost his life.

"He was into many things, boxing sports, dirt bike lacrosse, he did it all," said Johnathan McLendon, the victim's oldest brother.

McLendon had just graduated from Athens Drive High School this year and was looking forward to a bright future.

"He was going to start a boxing career," said Abdul Salaam, McLendon's stepfather.

The family told ABC11 McLendon was on the lacrosse team at Athens Drive and had a positive outlook on life.
