RALEIGH (WTVD) -- The Raleigh Police Department said Tuesday that 52-year-old Carl Devince King was violent and swinging a lamp when officers arrived at a home around 5:30 a.m. Monday in the 3000 block of Slippery Elm Drive in southeast Raleigh.

He was restrained and EMS and check-in officers were called because of his erratic behavior. When they arrived, EMS personnel attended to King and a short time later, CPR was initiated when his condition noticeably changed. CPR was continued at the scene until King was pronounced deceased.

In a 911 call released Monday, a woman told an operator that a man had, "broken into these people's house, kicked the door in ... he just keeps slamming the door ... I don't know if he broke into the house or what he did ma'am ... I'm scared of him, I'm really scared."

The woman was later heard on the call saying, "Don't do that! Calm down! No please! Stop!" To which a man's voice replies, "I can't help it!"

Police records show over the years they've responded to many calls to King's address. Those calls include suicide threats and assaults. King also has a record that lists 59 arrests.

However, a few of the man's relatives at the scene following the incident told ABC11 that King took medication for high blood pressure, and had no other known health issues.

King was the youngest of nine siblings, and was just baptized two weeks ago. They also said he attended a family reunion last Saturday, and seemed okay at the time.

Meanwhile following departmental protocol, the State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted to conduct an investigation of the in-custody death. Raleigh police have said all other applicable departmental policies and practices are being followed.
