MAIDEN, N.C. -- Officials say five people were taken to a hospital after a chemical leak at the Apple data center in Maiden.
Multiple news outlets report the leak happened around 2:30 p.m. Monday. Apple issued a statement saying the workers were taken to the hospital following possible exposure to fumes, which may have been released during a spill of a chemical used to clean the cooling systems. All five were discharged and will return to work Tuesday. The statement said the spill was quickly contained and poses no threat to anyone else at the facility.
Emergency responders say they utilized the Hazmat team to determine how workers got sick.
The more than 500,000-square-foot facility is one of the world's largest data centers.
Maiden is about 40 miles north of Charlotte.
